When Healing Becomes Counterproductive

If you’ve been in the realm of self help for a while, you most likely have tried all of the trends when it comes to mindset, physical health, manifesting, spirituality and more.

It’s easy to get caught up in the never ending pursuit to heal, to fix, to become better than our previous selves - in a word to transcend.

I certainly don’t want to diminish that many of us, myself included, have found tremendous support, insight and healing in pursuit of deeper self understanding and self help. But at some point, focusing exclusively on healing can keep you from truly living.

I’m often reminded by my therapist that certain parts of me will likely always be there. Perhaps, I’ll always feel a twinge of pain or regret over certain past events or failed relationships. And yet, that is okay. To deny that we aren’t deeply affected by life and the world would be to live in denial and to be disconnected from our hearts.

To become deeply embodied we must allow ourselves to experience the full gamut of experience that life offers us. We must allow ourselves to be vulnerable to both the joy and the sorrow. We must give ourselves permission to trip, to fall, to fail, to get back up and try again. We must give ourselves permission to love, and to be loved.

In certain seasons, healing is absolutely necessary, but then after we’ve allowed ourselves the time it takes, we can confidently utilize all that we’ve gleaned and learned to live a life that is fuller, richer and more authentic.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever gotten stuck in a healing season?

Sending all my love,

Kaitlyn
